How to Confirm Adenoid Hypertrophy

Patient's question:

My son is 5 years old. He always snorts while sleeping at night, and sometimes he suddenly struggles to catch his breath. Some people say it's a symptom of adenoid hypertrophy. How can adenoid hypertrophy be diagnosed?

Doctor's answer:

1、The child breathes through the mouth, and sometimes the "adenoid face" can be observed.
2、The oropharyngeal examination reveals a high and narrow hard palate, often accompanied by hypertrophy of the palatine tonsils.
3、During the anterior rhinoscope examination, the nasal mucosa is fully contracted before the examination, and a red, mass-like elevation may be seen in the nasopharynx.
4、Fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy shows lobulated lymphoid tissue with longitudinal fissures on the top and posterior wall of the nasopharynx, resembling half of an unpeeled orange.
5、Palpation involves using fingers to perform nasopharyngeal touch, where soft, mass-like structures can be felt on the top and posterior wall of the nasopharynx.
6、X-ray lateral view of the nasopharynx is helpful for diagnosis.
The symptoms of a cold are very similar to those of adenoid hypertrophy.
