Features: Sanmao Joining the Army depicts Sanmao's life in the Nationalist army. Although it contains humorous elements, the main tone is satirical, exposing and critiquing the corruption of the Nationalist army. Since the work was published in the Nationalist-ruled area at the time, its content has certain limitations. However, it served as a short sword directed at the enemy. It marks a qualitative change in the development of Zhang Leping's comic character Sanmao, from early humor to a more militant tone, representing a significant leap in Zhang Leping's artistic career and foreshadowing the birth of his masterpiece, the comic series Sanmao the Street Beggar.
