Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at middle and primary school students as well as general members of the public, designed to meet the needs of language learning. The dictionary mainly selects entries from the range of commonly used words, including 1,129 entries with identical pronunciation and meaning but different written forms, divided into 558 groups, with no more than three entries per group.
Our middle and primary school language teaching has always placed great emphasis on improving the recognition and application abilities of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires the correct use of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a focus on compound words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the general scope of pure character forms and is closely linked to the study of Chinese vocabulary. This is the reason why we chose to focus on characters and words first when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school language teaching.
The Character and Word Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, three of which are about single characters, and the other three are about compound words. Improving the understanding and application abilities of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for individual language learning. Therefore, this series of reference books will also be helpful to the general public. Emphasizing fundamentality and commonality is the principle behind the compilation of this series of reference books, and we have made some efforts in this regard:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words address issues of meaning, similar or identical pronunciation and form, and easily confused or mistaken words. These six topics are both the most fundamental and most important knowledge points in Chinese language learning.
2. Scope of Entries: The selected characters are primarily limited to the 2,500 most commonly used characters and 1,000 less commonly used characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words makes full use of the findings of lexical metrology research. For example, the selection of synonyms is largely based on the data from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, covering approximately 8,548 common words. The selection of near-sound words focuses on those with high usage frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but different meanings, including those that are easily confused between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciation. The selection of variant forms is based on the detection of both standard and variant forms in a massive corpus of billions of characters, ensuring more objective and accurate selection and analysis.
3. Presentation of Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on analyzing easily confused or mistaken aspects. Most general dictionaries and glossaries focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough definitions. However, to achieve a deep and correct understanding and application of a character or word, it is essential to understand the words adjacent to it and the subtle differences between them, thereby mastering their different usages. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: The dictionary strives to use colloquial and accessible language, aiming to achieve the goal of "making the profound clear and simple."
