Features: Since the publication of The Cihai (1999 Edition), it has been warmly welcomed by a broad readership. The Cihai is a comprehensive dictionary of considerable size, with its lexical section functioning as a medium to large-scale Chinese dictionary. The single characters, compound words, idioms, and allusions it collects have long been frequently sought after by readers for reference. Its selection of terms and entries covers both ancient and modern, with an extremely wide scope. The explanations primarily introduce the usage, origins, and evolution of words, providing illustrative examples. In the Lexical Section of the 79th and 89th editions of The Cihai, the Lexical Section had the highest circulation, exceeding one million copies. Now, in response to the requests of readers, we have compiled and published the lexical section of the 1999 edition of The Cihai, while making efforts to add new entries, correct errors, fill gaps, update content, refine wording, and enrich fundamental knowledge. Additionally, we have broken away from the traditional radical-based arrangement and adopted a phonetic sequence based on Hanyu Pinyin to organize all entries, thereby meeting the needs of readers for quick reference. The compilation and publication of The Cihai·Lexical Section are the result of years of collaborative effort by experts and scholars from Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Beijing, and other regions involved in this project. It represents the crystallization of intellectual wisdom and reflects the latest achievements in academic research within the field of Chinese language and literature.
