Multiple high fever seizures, is it epilepsy?

Patient's question:

I will ask the doctor about my child who is 7 years old. He has had high fever seizures before. The seizures started when he was two years old and have occurred many times since then. Last month, he had two more seizures due to fever, and he often wakes up from his dreams at night. Is this epilepsy?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, it appears during high fever. If convulsions occur after a fever, it indicates a high-temperature seizure. If convulsions are accompanied by fever, it could be epilepsy, or symptoms such as foaming at the mouth during an episode. You can take the child for a check-up to see if there are any abnormalities in the brain. It is recommended to have an electroencephalogram done at the hospital. If spikes appear, it suggests epilepsy, and phenytoin can be taken orally for treatment.
At the same time, the child is easily startled, so it is important to ensure they get more calcium. Children of this age are prone to calcium deficiency.
