Patient's question:
How to treat infantile spasms, is there a hospital that can treat it? Age: four monthsDoctor's answer:
Infantile spasms are a refractory form of epilepsy in infants and young children. Since their discovery, there has been no clear etiology or pathogenesis identified, nor an effective treatment method. Currently, hypotheses about the pathogenesis of infantile spasms suggest that the brainstem is the responsible structure. However, due to the brainstem being a "no-go" zone, it is not possible to study the firing activity of brainstem neurons and the transmission characteristics of the excitation they induce by implanting microelectrodes into the brainstem. On the other hand, to date, there has been no successful animal model of infantile spasms with brainstem dysfunction.
