The baby hasn't had a bowel movement for three days.

Patient's question:

Hello, my son is 15 months old. He had diarrhea last week, but then he had another bowel movement on Friday night, which was also quite loose. Now he hasn't had a bowel movement for three days. How could this happen? It's very worrying. Please explain, and what medication should be used?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, how is the child's diet? If the diet is normal but there is no bowel movement, the following methods can be applied:
(1) Add an appropriate amount of sugar to the milk, such as 10 grams of white sugar in 100 milliliters of milk.
(2) Give the child some honey water.
(3) Pay attention to feeding the child high-vitamin supplementary foods such as fresh juice, vegetable water, and apple puree.
If the child struggles very hard to have a bowel movement and it is difficult to pass, you can cut a bar of soap or use a glycerin suppository to insert into the anus. If it still doesn't work, you can use infant glycerin suppositories or take the child to the hospital for a doctor's treatment. Never give the child laxatives casually.
