Is it okay for a baby who is more than 5 months old to bump their head?

Patient's question:

My baby is five and a half months old. Accidentally, he rolled off a bed over 70 centimeters tall and hit his head. I don't know if he's scared??

Doctor's answer:

Some cases of intracranial hemorrhage or cerebral edema may not show obvious symptoms until several hours or even 1 to 2 days after a head collision. Parents should not be complacent if they visit the hospital immediately after the collision and find no problems, as they need to carefully observe the child for 48 hours. Do not allow the child to engage in strenuous exercise. Generally, wake the child up twice at midnight (12:00 AM) and 4:00 AM. Wake the child to the point where they can clearly speak and walk, and observe whether both pupils are of equal size. However, it may be difficult to observe in children with low cooperation. You can sleep near the child to monitor their breathing and sleep patterns. If any abnormalities are detected, wake the child to confirm whether unconsciousness has occurred.
Additionally, avoid eating for the first six hours after a head injury. At most, only plain water should be consumed. If nausea and vomiting persist after six hours, eating should also be avoided. Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
