Features: Cai Dongfan, a renowned historian and novelist of the Republic of China, aimed to "save the nation through historical narratives" and spent ten years creating The Popular Historical Narratives of China. Starting from Qin Shi Huang and ending in 1928, the series comprehensively records the 2,166 years of Chinese feudal history. It gained fame for its rich content and rigorous research, becoming highly favored by readers. The writing style of this series combines the narrative format of Romance of the Three Kingdoms with Mao Zonggang's annotations, featuring main text, annotations, and overall summaries—all self-annotated by Cai Dongfan. Through these annotations, he either refuted mythical claims, noted the sources and variations of certain historical materials, provided explanations of ancient government systems, laws, geography, artifacts, titles, and even colloquialisms, or offered praise or criticism on specific figures—all to help readers better understand the main text and clarify historical context. In selecting and using historical materials, Cai Dongfan primarily relied on "official histories" while also incorporating folk tales and anecdotes. Any information from these sources was backed by additional evidence, and he meticulously verified the materials to ensure accuracy. Due to his strong emphasis on historical authenticity and opposition to fictionalization, this narrative, though popular, holds significant historical value. The Romance of the Republic of China is one of the Popular Historical Narratives of China. It provides a detailed account of major historical events, including the Xinhai Revolution, Sun Yat-sen's resignation, Yuan Shikai's declaration of empire, Cai E's campaign against Yuan, Zhang Xun's restoration, the May Fourth Movement, and Sun Yat-sen's reorganization of the Kuomintang.
