In 1884, following the outbreak of the Sino-French War, Liu Mingchuan was appointed by the Qing government and later appointed as the Governor of Taiwan after the war. The novel follows this, describing Liu Mingchuan's journey to Taiwan upon French invasion, his defense of the island, and its subsequent development. Through the portrayal of Liu Mingchuan as a strategic thinker and military strategist, as well as the setbacks, misfortunes, pains, and regrets he faced, the novel authentically recreates the complex historical and social environment, enriching readers' knowledge and life experiences.
Through its intricate plot, the work reveals the lesser-known aspects of Liu Mingchuan's character. Liu Mingchuan successfully implemented reforms in Taiwan, earning him the titles of "Father of Modernization" and "Pioneer of Industrialization." Despite facing opposition, slander, and envy from some within and outside the court at the time, his legacy remains undiminished.
