He served as the director of the Jiangnan Industrial Bureau under Zhang Zhidong, the Viceroy of Liangjiang, and later as the salt administration official of Changbao in Hunan, acting as the provincial censor of Hunan. He assisted Chen Baozhen, the Hunan governor, in promoting new policies, making Hunan a focal point of national attention. After the failure of the reforms, he was nearly executed by Empress Dowager Cixi. He authored works such as "Poems from Renjilu," "History of Japan," "Poems on Japanese Affairs," and "Essays from Renjilu." This book includes prefaces, annotations, and references. Comprehensive, detailed, and easy to understand, it is worth reading.
