Features: Yan Jiayan is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Department of Chinese, Peking University. His pen names are Yan Jian and Jiaxi. He was born in Shanghai in November 1933. In 1958, he graduated as a part-time Ph.D. student at Peking University and has been working at the university ever since. From 1984 to 1989, he served as the director of the Department of Chinese at Peking University. From 1984 to 1997, he was a member of the second and third evaluation committees of the Language and Literature Discipline of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee. From 1986 to 1997, he served as the president of the National Ding Ling Research Association. Since 1988, he has been the vice chairman of the Beijing Federation of Literature and Arts. Since 1989, he has been the president of the China Modern Literature Research Association and has been the honorary president of the National Ding Ling Research Association since 1997. In 1991, he received the National Outstanding Contribution Scholarship from the State Council. His major works include: Zhi Chun Collection, A History of Modern Chinese Literature (a three-volume set), co-edited with Tang Tao, published by the People's Literature Publishing House from 1979 to 1980, and won the National First Outstanding Teaching Material Award (First Prize) in 1988. Qiu Shi Collection, a collection of essays on modern Chinese literature, published by Peking University Press in 1983, and won the Beijing First Humanities and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award (Second Prize) in 1987. A Concise History of Modern Chinese Literature, co-authored, published by the People's Literature Publishing House in 1984. On Modern Fiction and Literary Trends, a collection of essays, published by Hunan People's Publishing House in 1987. A History of Modern Chinese Fiction Schools, published by the People's Literature Publishing House in 1989, and won the National Second Outstanding Teaching Material Award (First Prize) in 1992. On Modern Chinese Literature and Other Topics, published by the Taiwan New Knowledge Publishing Center in 1988. Footprints of the Century – A Collection of Essays on Twentieth-Century Chinese Fiction, published by Hong Kong Tian Di Tian Shu Company in 1995, and published by the Writer Publishing House in 1996 (Beijing). Teaching Outline of Modern Chinese Literature, edited by him, published by Higher Education Press in 1996. Essays on Jin Yong's Novels, Misreading of the May Fourth Movement, a collection of academic essays and, On Lu Xun's Polyphonic Novels, published by Shanghai Education Press in 2001. His compiled works include: Selected Works of the New Sensibility School. Selected Works of Modern Chinese Fiction of Various Schools (a four-volume set). The Encyclopedia of China · of Chinese Literature, co-edited, published by the China Encyclopedia Press in 1986. The two volumes have more than 3 million words, of which 700,000 words are on contemporary and modern literature. Since 1979, Yan designed the framework of entries, organized the writing, and participated in the revision and finalization, which took seven years in total. Some entries were written by Yan himself.
