Features: The role and evolution of the "shi" in Chinese history is a highly complex phenomenon that cannot be fully explained by any single viewpoint. However, it is undeniable that the transmission and innovation of culture and thought have always been the central tasks of the "shi." From the perspectives of cultural history and intellectual history, this book attempts to observe and present the spiritual characteristics of the "shi" as a social class. It is obvious that this can only be a macro historical perspective. However, if macro analysis is not built on the foundation of micro-studies, it may become vague and arbitrary. Therefore, this book does not adopt a comprehensive historical approach but rather a series of specialized historical studies. I have selected several central themes related to the development of the "shi" in different historical periods and then conducted a comparative, specific, and in-depth analysis of each theme. I hope to demonstrate the unique position of the "shi" in the history of Chinese culture through this focused research method.
Chinese culture has formed a unique system, which is now widely recognized by scholars both in China and abroad as a historical fact. Compared to Western culture, the uniqueness of this cultural system is even more evident. However, the scope of culture is almost boundless; it is difficult to accurately describe the characteristics of Chinese culture in a few concise words. In recent decades, there have been countless writings discussing the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western cultures, truly falling into the state described by Mozi as "one person, one meaning; ten people, ten meanings." However, if we go beyond the level of language, it is not difficult to find that although the views of different scholars may appear highly divergent on the surface, they are not necessarily mutually incompatible. Compared to Western culture, Chinese culture exhibits its unique form in almost every aspect. Therefore, observers can capture one aspect of this uniqueness from any angle. This is the root cause of the diversity of opinions. As long as observers do not insist on generalizing based on partial perspectives, the more viewpoints there are, the more the characteristics of Chinese culture can be highlighted.
This book compiles twelve specialized historical studies, all of which primarily focus on the "shi." The "shi" in Chinese history is roughly equivalent to what is now called "intellectuals," though there are differences between the two. To respect historical facts, the term "shi" is still used here. These studies are basically conducted from the perspectives of cultural history and intellectual history, and the book is therefore named accordingly. This book does not adopt a comprehensive historical approach but rather a series of specialized historical studies. The author has selected several central themes related to the development of the "shi" in different historical periods and then conducted a comparative, specific, and in-depth analysis of each theme, hoping to demonstrate the unique position of the "shi" in the history of Chinese culture through this focused research method.
