Patient's question:
Does hyperbaric oxygen have an effect on hydrocephalus?Doctor's answer:
Preoperative CarePsychological Care: Since patients often lack understanding of their illness and feel fear about surgery, we should actively communicate with them, explaining the nature and severity of the disease, the necessity of the surgery, and introducing the surgical team to build trust and alleviate their fears and doubts, ensuring they are in the best physical and mental state to undergo the procedure.
Postoperative Observation and Care
(1) Closely monitor consciousness, pupil changes, vital signs, and limb movement. Pay attention to blood pressure (BP), pulse (P), respiratory rate (R), and pupil changes, recording all observations in a special log.
(2) If the temperature exceeds 38.5°C, take effective cooling measures to reduce oxygen consumption and basal metabolism in brain cells. This may include ice packs, ice pillows, chilled intravenous fluids, and placing ice bags on both sides of the neck, axillae, and groin. For patients undergoing cooling, monitor their complexion, pulse, respiratory rate, and sweating to prevent excessive cooling, which may lead to collapse.
3. Complication Monitoring
(1) Observe for symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, such as slow and weak pulse, rapid and irregular respiration, headache, vomiting, elevated blood pressure, and unilateral pupil dilation.
(2) Monitor the skin for ulcers or cerebrospinal fluid leakage and report any findings to the physician promptly for treatment.
(3) Observe for abdominal pain or discomfort.
