Patient's question:
Medical Description: On August 11th, while giving the baby grape juice, he accidentally inhaled the whole grape. That afternoon, he had a bowel movement. Starting from August 12th until now, he hasn't had a bowel movement, but he has been passing gas. What should we do? Can we get an appointment with the pediatric department at West China Hospital today?Past Treatment and Effects: On the 13th, we visited a community hospital and the doctor prescribed medication. After taking it four times, he still hasn't had a bowel movement, but he has been passing gas frequently. (The gas he passed on the 12th wasn't smelly, but the gas after taking the medicine is very smelly.)
Help Needed: We want to know the best way to treat this and whether we can get an appointment with the pediatric department at West China Hospital today. Urgent!!!
Doctor's answer:
Sometimes I split the grapes in half, and sometimes the baby just snatches them and eats them directly, no problem. For peace of mind, it's still better to eat them split, but occasionally eating a whole one isn't too much to worry about either. Just be more careful next time and try to divide the grapes into two or three small pieces for the baby to eat. It's easy for them to choke on whole grapes. It's okay, they can digest it. Grapes are actually a fruit that aids digestion, and my baby has swallowed several whole ones too. Just be a bit more careful in the future, and avoid choking.
