Fortress Besieged

Author: Qian Zhongshu
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2003-10-01
Features: In this book, I wanted to write about a certain part of modern Chinese society and a certain type of people. When writing about these people, I didn’t forget that they are human, just human, with the basic nature of hairless bipeds. The characters are, of course, fictional, but those who have a penchant for research will naturally not miss the opportunity to seek hidden meanings or give free rein to their interpretations. This book took two full years to write. Over those two years, I was often troubled by the world and grieved by life, and many times I wanted to give up. Fortress Besieged was first published in Shanghai in 1947, reprinted in 1948, and a third edition came out in 1949. After that, it was no longer reprinted domestically. Occasionally, I came across a new edition of it, and those were all pirated copies from Hong Kong. I haven’t seen the pirated copies from Taiwan, but I hear that it was a banned book there.
