Publish Date: 1995-06-01
Features: This anthology is divided into four volumes. The first volume contains works from 1843 to 1859, the second volume includes works from 1857 to 1871 and excerpts from Capital, the third volume contains works from 1871 to 1883, and the fourth volume includes works from 1884 to 1895 and letters between Marx and Engels. The documents selected for the anthology are generally arranged in chronological order of writing or publication. For the convenience of readers, prefaces and introductions written by Marx and Engels for certain works at different periods are usually compiled together with the original works. Additionally, the 10 articles discussing China and the excerpts from Capital (volumes one, two, and three) are also compiled separately. The letters between Marx and Engels are organized chronologically in the fourth volume. The first work in this volume is Marx's The Civil War in France. It was published as a declaration from the General Council of the International Workingmen's Association to all members in Europe and America. On March 18, 1871, the Paris proletariat heroically launched an armed uprising and proclaimed the establishment of the Paris Commune. Marx immediately collected and studied materials on the Commune's activities, writing the first draft and a second draft (excerpts of which are included in this volume), and finally completed this work. Here, Marx describes the actual activities of the Paris Commune during its 72 days of existence, summarizes its experiences and lessons, further develops Marxist theory on the proletarian revolution and the state, and discusses the economic policies of the proletariat after seizing power as well as the issue of the proletariat's allies.
