Can a baby's cross-eyed condition automatically recover?

Patient's question:

Baby is 14 months old, has some cross-eyed issues. Some books say it can correct itself after the age of 2. Please advise if treatment is necessary. Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Hello: The possibility of spontaneous recovery is basically zero! In ophthalmology, it is known as esotropia, commonly referred to as cross-eyed, and is related to refractive errors and accommodation. A pupil dilation and refraction test is needed, followed by wearing glasses. If there is no improvement after wearing glasses for 1-2 years, amblyopia may be present. Amblyopia is caused by strabismus, and only surgery can correct the eye position. However, surgical correction requires the earlier the better. Early correction allows the eye position to return to normal, which may gradually improve the vision of the amblyopic eye. If surgery is delayed, the vision of the amblyopic eye has been suppressed for a long time, making it difficult to restore vision. As for the best age for strabismus surgery, most believe it is best to perform the surgery around the age of 2.
