Child has diarrhea for five days.

Patient's question:

A child has had diarrhea for five days. I gave him some rice porridge, but I don't know if it's okay!! Thank you

Doctor's answer:

Replenish fluids. Children have small bodies but high metabolism. If diarrhea lasts for a long time or is severe, they are prone to dehydration. Even adults can easily dehydrate from diarrhea, so the first priority is to replenish fluids while also replenishing electrolytes and salt. A good method is to give children more water or rice soup, adding a small spoonful of salt. If they dislike the taste, a little sugar can be added.
Dietary regulation. It’s best to minimize medication for children. If they grow up taking too many pills, their immunity will naturally be compromised. Start with diet to simply combat diarrhea. Avoid feeding them high-nutrient or irritating foods. Some parents worry that their child will lose nutrients during diarrhea, so they supplement with lots of high-nutrient foods like milk, fish, or meat. Unknowingly, this can worsen gastrointestinal and prolong the recovery time.
