Elevated pathological bilirubin level entering the brain

Patient's question:

The child's neurological examination response was not very good. After the CT scan, it was said that there was brain damage. Three days after birth, the previous treatment and its effects: basically stable. What kind of assistance is needed: What should I do? Will it be as the doctor said, with cerebral palsy or will it interfere with motor function?...

Doctor's answer:

It is physiological jaundice, and there is also pathological jaundice. Physiological jaundice refers to the yellowing of the baby's skin and mucous membranes occurring 2-3 days after birth, without other symptoms. This type lasts for a short duration and disappears on its own within 7-10 days. Premature infants may take 3-4 weeks to recover on their own.
Ultraviolet light exposure or spending more time in the sun can also help with recovery. As for pathological jaundice, it refers to jaundice that does not subside. The most important reference data is the level of bilirubin in the blood. When the total bilirubin level is below 205 umol and is accompanied by various clinical symptoms, it should be considered pathological jaundice. Further medical evaluation and treatment are required.
