How should retinoblastoma be treated?

Patient's question:

My son often tells me that his vision seems to be getting clearer and clearer. At first, I thought he might be nearsighted and didn't pay much attention. But recently, he said it hurts, and I got worried. I took him to the hospital, and the doctor said he has retinoblastoma! What kind of help do you need: Is there any good medicine for this disease?

Doctor's answer:

Surgical therapy: It remains one of the better treatments currently available. If it is a single eye and the tumor is still confined within the eye, early enucleation should be performed. The optic nerve sectioned during surgery must not be shorter than 1 centimeter. Postoperative pathological examination should be conducted carefully; if it is found that the tumor has invaded the optic nerve stump, radiotherapy should be implemented. If the orbital contents are also affected, en bloc resection of the orbital contents should be performed, followed by postoperative radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy.
