Features: Ambition and desire form the twin wheels driving the plot of this novel. The ambitious college graduate, Huang Sanmu, is fortunate enough to join the municipal government and become a member of the power club, but he fails to experience the thrill of power. Instead, he feels unaccustomed to the trivialities and cold, rigid rules of the game, and his scholar's nature occasionally reveals itself like a fox's tail. His superior wants to groom him as his own son, but Huang writes a critical article on his department in an internal reference, dashing his superior's hopes for promotion to Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee. He is relegated to the sidelines and endures humiliation and grievances. Extreme repression forces him to seek opportunities to vent his frustrations. The humiliation he suffers from power compels him to transfer it, at all costs: he toys with women just as his superior mocks subordinates, deriving and the power of domination in his frenzied pursuit, conquest, and possession of them. He even neglects love, leading to his lover being seduced and abducted by others. When fate smiles on him, he encounters the daughter of the Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee. He doesn’t hesitate to "solve" her and marries her, rising step by step in the power struggles involving her father and others. He finally tastes the sweetness of power. At that very moment, he meets the woman he loves, and both his career and life take a sharp turn once again.
