Patient's question:
Just born, 20 days old, had a slightly yellow face a few days ago, now the eyes and face are yellow, bilirubin level is 18. Has been eating breast milk since birth, in good spirits, eating a lot, taking naps, urinating and defecating normally. Weight at birth was 6 pounds 8 ounces, unsure of what to do. Previous treatment and effectiveness: Went to the hospital today and was prescribed some medicine. What kind of assistance is needed: How can jaundice be reduced quickly?Doctor's answer:
Test Value: Serum total bilirubin 5.1~19 μmol/L (0.3~1.1 mg/dL)Serum conjugated bilirubin 1.7~6.8 μmol/L (0.1~0.4 mg/dL)
Guidance:
1. To determine whether jaundice is present and its severity
Serum total bilirubin (STB) levels of 17~34 μmol/L indicate subclinical jaundice;
4~170 μmol/L indicate mild jaundice;
170~340 μmol/L indicate moderate jaundice;
>340 μmol/L indicate severe jaundice.
2. To identify the type of jaundice
STB levels of 340~510 μmol/L suggest obstructive jaundice (complete intestinal obstruction);
Incomplete intestinal obstruction is indicated by STB levels of 170~265 μmol/L.
Hepatocellular jaundice is indicated by STB levels of 17~200 μmol/L;
Hemolytic jaundice rarely falls below 85 μmol/L.
