Features: After witnessing the brilliance of the sun, people often overlook the brightness of the moon, just as today, when people frequently discuss the Tang Dynasty's territorial expansion while ignoring the prosperity and luxury of the Song Dynasty. Compared to the Tang, the Song was often financially weak in resisting external threats, but its frequent gifts of tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of "snowflake silver" to foreign tribes reveal its level of prosperity. During the Tang Dynasty, Chang'an was divided into districts and markets. Commercial activities were limited to the Eastern and Western Markets, whereas the Song no longer had such distinctions and also lacked the Tang's prohibition on night markets. According to Dream of the Eastern Capital, the capital at the time was described as "every transaction involving millions," and "in the bustling areas, the noise never ceased." The lively commercial scene of Kaifeng depicted in Zhang Zeduan's Along the River During the Qingming Festival and the prosperous scenes described in Liu Yong's Ode to the Sea Tide—"smoky willow bridges, fluttering curtains, and tens of thousands of households," "markets filled with pearls and jade, households overflowing with silk and brocade, competing in luxury"—all demonstrate that the Song Dynasty's prosperity and luxury far surpassed previous dynasties. Though "satiety breeds lust" is a joke, during the Song, "warm breezes and melodious tunes, with thousands of households competing in music," "everywhere are pavilions and red-gate courtyards, with new melodies and laughter in the alleys and streets," and "new songs and laughter in the tea houses and taverns" had become social trends. Thus, it is no surprise that the art of Ci poetry reached its peak in the Song Dynasty, evolving from the to the imperial court.
