This collection of short stories was copied and circulated even during its early creation, and its popularity spread even wider after it was published. By the mid-19th century, it had been translated into over 20 languages, including English, French, German, Russian, and Japanese. Many stories in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio were passed down in folk traditions, retaining the characteristics of primal religion. In primal religious beliefs, the soul is regarded as the essence of life, the source of vitality in all things. Therefore, when depicting various fox spirits, ghosts, and demons, the book often emphasizes their spirit while omitting their physical appearance, especially in stories of reincarnation and resurrection through the bodies of others. This tendency is particularly evident in tales like The Lady of the Lu Ministry, where the protagonist is reborn as the daughter of the Lu Ministry official, and Little Xie, where Qiu Cun returns to life by inhabiting the body of a wealthy woman, Cai’s daughter. These resurrected women, though physically different from their previous selves, remain fundamentally the same in spirit. They continue to earn the affection of their loved ones, and their love is not affected by their changed appearances. In Lian Xiang, the female ghost of Li uses the body of a wealthy woman, Zhang Yan'er, to be reborn. After reviving, she gradually regains her original appearance. The plot of this story is particularly fantastical, but it still reflects the belief in the primacy of the soul, with physical appearance being secondary.
