Originally serving in the Wuyi Left Army, he later became a subordinate of Wu Peifu and was highly appreciated by him. He was promoted from captain to general through successive ranks. During this period, he was ordered to participate in the warlord conflicts, which was a wrong choice and a detour in his life. After Wu Peifu was defeated by the Northern Expedition Army and retired, he insisted on staying with him and thus left the army to return to his hometown of Pengla to farm. In 1927, Yu Xuezhong was invited to join the Northeast Army and was appointed as the commander of the 20th Army, the commander of the Linxi army, and the commander of the Pingjin garrison, among other positions. From then on, under the command of Zhang Xueliang, he opposed civil war, suppressed internal turmoil, supported unification, and remained loyal to Zhang, becoming close friends.
