Features: In recent years, non-point source pollution in watersheds has been contributing increasingly to eutrophication, becoming a major water pollution issue in China and severely affecting the sustainable development of the watershed. The overall approach to controlling non-point source pollution is to: first, reduce the generation and discharge of non-point source pollutants through reasonable planning, engineering measures, technical measures, policy regulations, management, and monitoring, controlling the pollution sources to the minimum extent possible; second, weaken the diffusion and transport intensity of pollutants, striving to achieve on-site treatment and disposal of pollutants, and controlling the pollution to the smallest possible scope. Among various non-point source pollutants in watersheds, stormwater runoff is the main pathway for the output of non-point source pollutants and itself is also an important pollution source. Its characteristics include strong pollution impact, significant spatiotemporal variations in quantity and quality, and it causes significant environmental and ecological damage to receiving waters. Currently, there are very few non-point source control technologies available domestically and internationally, especially for controlling stormwater runoff pollution. These technologies also face challenges in terms of engineering land use, treatment costs, and treatment efficiency. Developing economical and applicable new technologies has become a research hotspot and difficulty in controlling non-point source pollution in watersheds.
Zeolite adsorption treatment is a wastewater treatment technology that utilizes the selective ion exchange properties of zeolite to remove high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen from water. In the past decade, research on this technology has become increasingly widespread and in-depth, particularly with the renewed recognition and evaluation of zeolite bio-regeneration, which has greatly enhanced the potential of applying zeolite in non-point source pollution control. This book systematically introduces the research on controlling stormwater runoff pollution in the Erhai Lake watershed using natural zeolite adsorption-bio-regeneration technology. The study theoretically analyzes the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of zeolite, the possibility of zeolite bio-regeneration, the bio-regeneration mechanism of bio-zeolite, and simulates the water quality of stormwater runoff in the Erhai Lake watershed. It conducts dynamic bio-zeolite adsorption-bio-regeneration operational tests and examines the adsorption characteristics of zeolite, the bio-regeneration effect, and the wastewater treatment effect from an application perspective. The ultimate goal is not only to achieve dynamic regeneration of zeolite but also to reduce the load of non-point source pollution. The core content of the research is the study of bio-nitrification, which enables zeolite to be bio-regenerated. Influenced by the characteristics of non-point source pollution in the Erhai Lake watershed and the limitations that may be encountered during actual engineering implementation, the experiments adopt conditions different from traditional bio-nitrification/denitrification treatment processes. After achieving good treatment effects, an in-depth study of the bio-nitrogen transformation process is conducted, revealing that the nitrogen transformation in the bio-zeolite system is completed by microbial communities of fungi and actinomycetes with heterotrophic nitrification characteristics. These microorganisms can transform ammonia nitrogen adsorbed by zeolite into nitrogen gas through simultaneous nitrification/denitrification, thereby removing it from the system.
This book is intended for reference by scientific and technical personnel in the fields of environment and ecology, as well as university teachers and students. Those interested in lake eutrophication control, zeolite technology, ecological restoration, and bio-nitrification will also find relevant reading points in this book.
