Patient's question:
Baby's 45-day skin test for jaundice showed 14 on forehead, 12 on abdomen, and 11 on thigh. Today at 47 days, the hospital test showed 13 on forehead, 14 on abdomen, and 11 on thigh. The doctor prescribed Bifidobacterium Lactis Granules, which were soaked in hot water or mixed into milk starting from noon on the 10th and have been taken until today. The doctor advised to wean breastfeeding for 3 days. However, on the first day, the baby was given formula milk during the day but breastfed at night. On the third day, the baby took a few sips of breast milk but was mostly given formula milk. Today is the third day, and the baby has only been given formula milk so far.Seeking assistance: Is this level considered high? Will it affect getting the vaccination? Should I focus solely on weaning breastfeeding? Does it mean I need to avoid even a single sip of breast milk for the full three days? I asked the doctor today, and they said the level is normal, there's no issue, and breastfeeding can continue while getting the vaccination. However, the abdomen level has dropped, and I still feel uneasy...

Doctor's answer:
Due to the increase of indirect and/or direct bilirubin in the body, which should cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin and sclera), it is called jaundice. When any of the following conditions occur, "pathological jaundice" should be considered: 1. Jaundice reappears within 24 hours after the newborn is born; 2. Jaundice also appears on the limbs and soles of the hands and/or feet, in addition to the trunk skin and sclera; 3. Full-term infants have jaundice for less than 8 days, preterm infants for less than 2 weeks; 4. Progressive worsening or recurrence after improvement; 5. Total bilirubin: Full-term infants should be below 12 mg/L; preterm infants should be below 15 mg/L. 6. Abnormal symptoms and characteristics appear on the basis of jaundice. Your baby's forehead measured 13, abdomen 14, and thigh 11, which is not within the normal range.
