Features: Genre refers to the type and style of literary works. When writers compose poems or musicians create melodies, they must first consider which genre to adopt. Each genre has a certain specification. However, in the hands of literary artists, the expressive techniques and creative styles of each genre vary from person to person, as the saying goes, "A book reveals its author." Genres are categorized into hierarchies, from broad to specific, with clear layers and distinct structures. The form of a genre depends on the purpose and conditions of creation and performance, the creative thinking process, the content and form of the work, and more. This book summarizes the musical genres and structural forms of the Middle Ages, Baroque, Renaissance, Classical, and Romantic periods in the history of Western music, serving as a comprehensive guide to Western musical genres and forms. Author Qian Yiping is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. The course she teaches, "Analysis of Musical Works," was selected as one of the 100 Excellent Courses in Shanghai in 2003 by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.
