Author: Zhang Yongxian
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-01-01
Features: This book is compiled based on the new College English Curriculum Teaching Requirements and the adjustment requirements for the new CET-4 exam, featuring the following four characteristics:
1. Authoritative Author Personally Sets the Questions
The author, Zhang Yongguang, is a senior professor at Renmin University of China and has studied or worked abroad for nearly 10 years. He has conducted in-depth and unique research on English vocabulary and its memorization methods, and his teaching style is highly favored by students. The author personally wrote 30 sets of vocabulary and grammar mock tests, arranged in difficulty from low to high, emphasizing the scientific nature of learning. He has used the content of this book to teach at Renmin University, which was well-received by students.
2. Compiled According to the New Teaching Requirements of the Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education has newly formulated the Teaching Requirements for College English Curriculum (Trial Version), dividing the teaching requirements into three levels: general requirements, higher requirements, and higher requirements. The general requirements are the basic standards that non-English major undergraduate graduates of higher education institutions should achieve, with a total vocabulary of 4,500 words and 700 phrases, including 2,000 active words—words that students should be able to use proficiently in both spoken and written expression based on cognitive understanding. The compilation of this book is based on two sources: the "general requirements" in the Teaching Requirements for College English Curriculum and the CET-4 Syllabus.
3. Reflects and Predicts the Changing Trends in CET-4 Question Design
Since 2003, subtle changes have occurred in the CET-4 exam questions, particularly in the vocabulary and structure section. Grammar questions have been significantly reduced, while vocabulary discrimination questions have sharply increased, with the examination style gradually aligning with that of the CET-6. Numerous synonyms, antonyms, and near-homophones often cause confusion. In reality, mastering the meanings of synonyms and near-homophones, especially synonyms, is a challenge in vocabulary learning. To address this issue, the author selects a certain proportion of easily confused vocabulary in each test set, providing comparative analysis to highlight the similarities and differences between them, helping candidates memorize and master these words.
4. Replicates the Contextual Usage of Vocabulary in Solutions
Since 2000, the Ministry of Education has made major adjustments to the CET-4 exam. The revised exam will focus on assessing students' listening, speaking, and English usage skills while expanding their vocabulary. To enhance candidates' English usage skills and meet the new exam requirements, the author provides example sentences for some key vocabulary during the solution process, replicating the context in which the vocabulary is used to demonstrate its "living" meaning. Detailed yet concise explanations further aid students in understanding the meaning of the vocabulary.
