Features: France has long been renowned for its rich literary diversity, having produced numerous representative schools, movements, and literary trends, as well as a large number of world-renowned writers whose works hold exemplary significance in literary history and are among the most precious treasures in human cultural heritage. As the 20th century draws to a close, it is clearly meaningful to examine and summarize the various phenomena of French literature in this century within their specific social and cultural contexts. This is precisely our original intention. We have referred to a vast number of domestic and international works, striving to absorb existing research findings as much as possible, with the aim of outlining the trajectory of literary history more clearly and systematically introducing the actual state of French literature in different periods of this century, as well as providing in-depth analysis and appropriate evaluations of important writers and works. However, it should be noted that any historical research requires a sufficient temporal distance, and the writing of literary history is particularly so. It is impossible to encompass all aspects of 20th-century French literature within the scope of a single book, and the selections made at present are unlikely to be objectively or fairly balanced and may require time to prove their legitimacy. In conclusion, this literary history is far from perfect, but if it can provide a reliable foundation for deeper research, our purpose will have been largely achieved.
