Patient's question:
The baby is 11 and a half months old and has been feeling unwell these last couple of days. Upon waking up, they experience chills, their lips turn purple, and they tremble severely with cold hands and feet. After the chills subside, they develop a high fever. What could be the cause?Past treatment and outcomes: A blood test was conducted, and the doctor diagnosed inflammation. They were given IV fluids for four days, which worked, but the condition returned after another four days.
What help is needed: What is the actual cause?
Doctor's answer:
The normal body temperature of a person is about 37.2°C, unless the temperature is below 38.5°C (adults) or 39°C (children), there is no need to be overly anxious. Generally, sudden low-grade fever usually indicates an infection of pathogens in the body: acute inflammatory conditions such as colds, pneumonia, meningitis, and scarlet fever are often accompanied by low-grade fever. It is recommended to have a chest X-ray to check for respiratory inflammation and then decide on anti-inflammatory treatment. Alternatively, a brain CT scan can be performed if there is a concern about brain disorders.
