Patient's question:
Half a month ago, I went to the hospital because of a cough and was diagnosed with pneumonia. I was prescribed antibiotics for six days, then took antibiotics for two more days, followed by another three days of antibiotics, which I also took for three days. The cough has been recurring, and it hasn't improved yet. The doctor listened and said the pneumonia has resolved. It's now a cold with a cough. I would like to ask if using so many antibiotics on such a young child has any effects? I am currently taking Cefixime, Bamboo Extract, and Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride. Can these three medications be taken together?Medical History and Treatment Effects:
Intravenous and oral antibiotics
Desired Help:
What are the effects of using so many antibiotics? Can these three medications be taken together? Why hasn't the cough improved after two weeks despite the use of so many antibiotics?
Doctor's answer:
The first drug is an antibiotic, and bamboo juice is a drug for resolving phlegm and relieving coughs. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is a drug that reduces tracheal sensitivity, providing relief for coughs caused by airway hyperresponsiveness. If the child's cough is still caused by a bacterial infection, these three drugs need to be taken together. Long-term use of cephalosporin antibiotics can lead to dysbiosis-related nausea and vomiting. Therefore, once it is confirmed that the bacterial infection in the child has been suppressed (white blood cells return to normal in blood tests), these drugs should be discontinued. The other two drugs have minimal interference. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride may cause drowsiness in children, but other side effects are not significant. Wishing the baby a speedy recovery.
