How to cool down a child with a fever?

Patient's question:

The day before yesterday I had a fever and took medicine and got an injection. Yesterday during the day I was fine, but at 2 a.m. my temperature went up to 37.5 degrees. There was no medicine at home, so I had to wait until it was warm to go to the hospital. Is that okay?

Doctor's answer:

Children with fever should not be rushed to use medication to reduce it. Because fever is a defensive response of the human body, antipyretic drugs can only lower body temperature but cannot eliminate the root cause of the fever. Generally, it is not necessary to rush to reduce fever if the body temperature does not exceed 38.5°C, especially before a clear diagnosis is made.
In general, when a child's body temperature is above 38.5°C, it is best to drink more hot water, get more rest, closely monitor changes in the condition, or use physical cooling methods to reduce fever. However, if the fever persists for too long or the temperature is too high (below 38.5°C), antipyretic medication must be used to provide necessary treatment.
