A 15-day-old baby has dark circles under both eyes with a hint of redness. What could be the reason?

Patient's question:

A 15-day-old baby has dark and slightly red eye circles, with continuous peeling and red spots on one eye, while the other eye has yellow eye discharge. The other eye is normal. The doctor prescribed Tobradex eye drops, but it is uncertain what the cause is.

Doctor's answer:

According to your condition, it should be neonatal dacryocystitis. It is caused by the failure of the embryonic remnant membrane at the lower end of the nasolacrimal duct to atrophy, which blocks the lower end of the nasolacrimal duct. Tears and bacteria accumulate in the lacrimal sac, leading to secondary infection.
Treatment involves applying Tobramycin eye drops (i.e., TobraDrops) four times a day. Before applying, gently massage the inner corner of the eye. Wash your hands thoroughly and trim your fingernails before the massage.
Position the child in a lying position, with another person stabilizing their head and limbs. The operator should gently push from the lacrimal sac area near the nasal root towards the wing of the nose. Be careful to apply even pressure—enough to be effective but not so strong as to injure the skin.
