The "Liren Fu" (Ode to Beautiful Women) begins:
A guest, still in his twenties and not yet in office, formed ties with the noble family and pursued the imperial court. He traveled through the homes of the Xu and Shi clans. Upon returning, he declared:
The women of narrow alleys (the term "fangnü," as recorded in "Yiwen Lueji," is also translated as "talented women"), the beauties of the Copper Street.
Graceful as the moon, charming as spring.
They gaze with longing, awaiting their price,
Their thoughts linger on robes and sashes.
Their fragrance surpasses scattered musk,
Their beauty blooms like a blooming lotus.
Their feathered ornaments shimmer,
Their flowered hairpins gleam in disarray.
Their silk robes rustle without advancing,
Their bright lanterns remain hidden.
They pause midway along the veranda,
And stroll back along the long corridor.
The pond reflects the lotus,
The wind moves the bamboo, rustling their clothes.
At dusk, they linger,
And only arrive at midnight.
From darkness to light,
They conceal their shame, revealing their allure.
Their silk robes trail like flowing silk,
Their jade pendants jingle, their emerald hairpins rattle.
They arrive with light makeup,
And leave with lingering elegance.
Their makeup drips like dew,
Their hair is combed with clear streams.
Falling flowers enter their collars,
A gentle breeze moves their hips.
