Features: The two dynasties of Sui and Tang were the peak of our country's medieval prosperity, with their cultural heritage and institutions spreading widely. From the northern Great Wall to the southern Jiaozhi, from the eastern Japan to the western Central Asia, yet there has been no comprehensive book discussing their origins and evolution. This is a shortcoming in Chinese historiography. This book synthesizes records from ancient books and newly discovered historical documents related to the institutions of the Sui and Tang dynasties, analyzes their factors, and deduces their origins and developments, aiming to provide a reference for beginners in the field.
Chen Yinque, throughout his life, wrote with the moral compass of "freedom of thought and independence of spirit." His works are numerous, leaving a legacy for future generations. He pioneered a new realm in historical studies, and his personal charisma remains an inspiration to posterity. This book is a compilation of his lecture notes and other scattered historical manuscripts from his teaching career, the first time they are published. In accordance with his wishes, the entire book is printed in traditional Chinese characters in vertical columns, with names of people, places, and books not marked with symbols. Generally, standard characters are used, with only a few variant characters retained.
This book is a collection of Chen Yinque's "Brief Discussion on the Origins of Sui and Tang Institutions" and "Commentaries on the Political History of the Tang Dynasty." The main purpose of this paper is to correct the claim in Wang Mingsheng's "Critiques of the Seventeen Histories" that Wang Zun achieved no significant achievements. It cites historical facts to prove that in the early years of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Wang Zun united the political and social forces within Jiangdong to resist the invasions of the powerful nomadic tribes from the north. As a result, Chinese culture was preserved, and his contributions were indeed invaluable. The paper also analyzes the social strata and residential areas of the northerners who migrated south, and discusses their relationship with the later history of the Southern Dynasties. At the end of the article, there is an appendix of inscriptions from recently unearthed Eastern Jin tombs in Guangzhou, which can also serve as evidence for historians.
