Publishing Date: 2001-06-01
Features: This paper aims to correct the claim in Wang Mingsheng's "Critique of the Seventeen Histories" that Wang Zun achieved no significant deeds. It cites historical facts to demonstrate that Zun united the political and social forces within Jiangdong during the early years of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, collectively resisting the invasions of the powerful nomadic tribes from the north. As a result, Chinese culture was preserved, and his contributions were indeed invaluable. The paper also analyzes the social strata and residential regions of the northerners who migrated south, and discusses their relationship with the later history of the Southern Dynasties. At the end of the article, there is an appendix featuring inscriptions from recently unearthed Jin Dynasty tombs in Guangzhou, which can also serve as evidence for historians. Professor Chen Yinque, throughout his life, wrote with the moral compass of "freedom of thought and independence of spirit" as his academic career's guiding principle. His works are numerous, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations, opening up entirely new realms in the study of history. His personal integrity remains an inspiration to posterity. This book is a compilation of Professor Chen's lecture notes and other scattered historical manuscripts from his teaching career, marking the first time it is published. In accordance with Professor Zun's wishes, the entire book is printed in traditional Chinese characters in vertical format, with personal names, place names, and book titles not marked with symbols, generally using standard characters while retaining a few variant forms.
