Features: This book is a widely recognized and adopted university physics textbook in the United States. It covers topics such as mechanics, thermodynamics, vibrations and waves, electromagnetism, optics, and special relativity. The book emphasizes conceptual understanding and the explanation of principles, paying close attention to teaching students how to solve physics problems. In addition to providing numerous appropriate examples, it also summarizes the thought processes and steps for solving problems based on principles at appropriate times, and adds timely notes where students are prone to misunderstandings and errors. The book also cites many vivid real-life examples to inspire students' interest in learning and broaden their horizons. It is suitable for general engineering colleges, especially for bilingual teaching.
Hugh D. Young is Professor of Physics at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Carnegie-Mellon for both undergraduate and graduate studies and earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie-Mellon in 1956 and has also spent two years as a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Young's career has been entirely centered around undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks and, in 1973, became a co-author with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. With their deaths, he assumed full responsibility for the new editions of these books, most recently the eighth edition of University Physics.
