Will this transmit any viruses?

Patient's question:

A child goes to the hospital for a blood test. The doctor uses a cotton swab dipped in povidone-iodine to clean the area where the blood will be drawn, and then uses the used cotton swab to press the needle site when withdrawing the needle. The cotton swabs have all come into contact with the doctor's gloves. Will this transmit any viruses?

Doctor's answer:

I'm glad to explain your question. According to your description, your child had a blood draw at the hospital. Generally, the phlebotomist would use a sterile cotton swab that has been used for your child to apply pressure to the site after the blood draw. However, they would never put the tip of the cotton swab into their palm or touch other parts of their body. You can rest assured about that. If you're still not comfortable, you can sterilize the cotton swab for your child. I hope my explanation helps you. Wishing your little one a healthy and joyful transformation!
