What is adenoid hypertrophy?

Patient's question:

My child is over two years old and has been constantly running a nose for more than one and a half months. No medicine seems to help. The doctor conducted a thorough examination and said it's due to adenoid hypertrophy. What treatment is needed? Will it affect his development? What kind of help would you like: What is adenoid hypertrophy?

Doctor's answer:

The adenoid is a lymphatic tissue in the nasopharynx, which is the back of the nose and the upper part of the throat. In children, it is usually larger, and simple nasal discharge can often be treated with nasal fluticasone spray. If it is particularly large and affects breathing, causing snoring, it can impact facial and jaw development. If conservative treatment is not effective, surgery to remove the adenoid may be necessary at the age of 4-5.
As a person grows older, the adenoid will gradually enlarge, and the condition may improve or symptoms may completely disappear. If conservative treatment is ineffective, the adenoid should be removed as early as possible. Surgery is typically recommended after the age of 4.
