Why do newborns strain like they are urinating when feeding?

Patient's question:

A newborn has been born for one and a half months. Throughout the day, they experience several periods where their entire body twists and strains intensely, as if they are trying to urinate, and they pass a lot of gas. Sometimes, when the straining is particularly intense, they become tired and drowsy. What could be the reason? They are eating normally, being fed a mix of breast milk and formula.

Doctor's answer:

A two-and-a-half-month-old baby is being mixed-fed. The baby twists and strains all over every day, and has frequent bowel movements. Straining is normal for babies, but if there are frequent bowel movements, it may indicate some digestive issues. Feed appropriately. Under normal circumstances, formula is usually fed every three to four hours, and more water should be given between feedings. Breast milk is usually fed every two to three hours. Now, the feeding time can be shortened, and more water should be given between feedings. Observe carefully.
