Patient's question:
My baby is also seven months old, but he's only 76 cm tall and weighs only 18 kilograms. He often opens his mouth whether he's taking a nap or during the day. I'm wondering if he might be a Down syndrome child. Does it look like that?Doctor's answer:
Dwarfism, small head circumference, short anteroposterior diameter of the head, flat occiput with a flat head. Short neck, loose skin. Bone age often lags behind chronological age, delayed teething and often malpositioned. Fine, soft, and sparse hair. Late closure of the anterior fontanelle, a second fontanelle may be present in the midline of the parietal bone. Short limbs, due to ligamentous laxity, joints can be excessively flexed. Thick and short fingers, poor development of the middle phalanx of the little finger causing it to bend inward, short phalanges, the triradiate carpal point shifts distally, common transverse palmar creases and sandal foot, about more than half of the patients have an arch-shaped palmar crease on the ball of the thumb. Often presents with anorexia and feeding difficulties.
