Patient's question:
On January 7, 2012, at 6-7 PM, I started feeling feverish. After getting blood tests done at the hospital, the doctor said it was a viral infection and that I needed to receive intravenous drips for testing. The test results confirmed: viral infection. After the drips, my symptoms did not improve, so the next day I went back to the hospital for more drips (normally, I would sweat after getting fever-reducing shots, but this time I did not). My temperature came down during the treatment, but as soon as I got home, it started rising again, and each time it got worse. Please provide some useful advice.Doctor's answer:
It is best to treat with traditional Chinese medicine, using herbal medicine to clear heat and detoxify, such as Xiaoer Huanglian (Children's Huanglian) and other heat-clearing and detoxifying preparations. Avoid using intravenous drips, as they can damage a child's blood vessels and leave the medication lingering within them. Fever-reducing drugs only provide temporary relief and merely reduce fever without addressing the root problem. If a child has a low fever (below 38.5°C, or below 38°C for children with a history of febrile convulsions), physical cooling methods can be used. Use lukewarm water (around 40°C) to wipe the child's palms, soles of the feet, armpits, and groin, or cover their head with a towel. During this time, tolerate taking traditional Chinese medicine and drink plenty of water.
