My baby is 20 days old and why is he spitting up while sleeping

Patient's question:

My baby is 20 days old. Why does he always fuss for milk when he's sleeping and seems to struggle each time? After feeding, I've burped him, but he still fusses 3-5 times within an hour. Is this normal?

Doctor's answer:

Nipple leakage refers to milk dripping from the edge of the mouth after feeding, usually in small amounts. It often occurs when the baby changes position after feeding and does not affect growth and development. As the baby grows older, nipple leakage gradually decreases and naturally disappears around 6 months of age. It is a normal phenomenon.
Common causes of vomiting include overfeeding, excessive milk volume, a nipple with a large hole causing milk to flow too quickly, an improperly filled bottle during bottle feeding, swallowing air while eating, or frequent changes in position after feeding. If the above feeding and care methods are improved, and additional techniques such as holding the baby upright after feeding, gently patting their back to burp, and placing the baby on their right side are applied, vomiting can be effectively prevented.
