Why does the child always come back to nursing after finishing the milk, and what can be done?

Patient's question:

The baby is now four months old. Recently, she has been spitting up after feeding almost every time. It happens about three or four times a day. I'm so worried and can't find the reason why. Usually, she burps well, and I also try to burp her after feeding, but she still spits up. What could be causing this? What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

There are many reasons that can trigger a baby to wean. If the nipple hole is too small, the baby has to suck hard, which can cause air and milk to be drawn in together, leading to spitting up. If the issue is with the nipple, I suggest trying a new nipple.
Alternatively, it could be that the baby's gastrointestinal development is not yet complete, with a short esophagus and an opening to the stomach that cannot close completely. This can make spitting up more likely. When feeding the baby, the angle should not be too flat. After feeding, gently pat the baby's back to help them burp and expel the air swallowed while swallowing milk dryly. This can reduce the likelihood of spitting up.
