Can a humidifier be used in a newborn's room?

Patient's question:

The baby is about to turn one month old and was admitted to the hospital for ten days due to pneumonia. She just got discharged today. The room at home is quite dry, so I'm considering buying a humidifier. Could you please ask the doctor if it's okay to use one? Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

This is acceptable. Using a humidifier correctly will never increase the likelihood of respiratory diseases. When using a humidifier, it must be cleaned regularly. Otherwise, mold and other microorganisms in the humidifier can enter the air with the mist and then into a person's respiratory tract, making it easy to contract humidifier pneumonia. Additionally, higher humidity is not always better. In winter, the humidity that the human body feels most comfortable with is around 50%. If the air humidity is too high, people will feel chest tightness and difficulty breathing. Therefore, humidification should be moderate.
