What causes blood in the stool of a baby

Patient's question:

My baby is six months and ten days old. Since two and a half months ago, she has occasionally had blood in her stool. There was once when she had blood streaks for more than 10 days in a row. I took her to the hospital for a thorough examination of her stool. The results showed 3-5 white blood cells and 13-15 red blood cells. Blood tests were also conducted, and she was given some medication which helped a bit. However, when she stopped taking the medicine, the blood streaks returned. Now, sometimes it's not just streaks but entire patches of blood. What could be wrong?

Doctor's answer:

First, it may be caused by enteritis, and second, it may be due to excessive stomach fire or dampness-heat in the spleen and stomach. After an external hemorrhoid is scraped or inflamed, it will bleed, and long-term blood in the stool can lead to anemia in the patient. The external hemorrhoid nodule is outside the anus, and increased secretions can trigger anal itching or anal eczema. Generally, this condition is caused by inflammation in the intestines, such as ulcerative colitis, for example.
