Patient's question:
My baby is twenty days old. When he's about to fall asleep, he'll shake his head vigorously, swing his arms and legs, then stop and close his eyes to sleep for a while before waking up again to repeat the same actions until he falls into a deep sleep. When he's awake, he also plays by swinging his arms and legs, but not too forcefully. He also plays with his tongue. His spirits and feeding are both good. He drinks 100 milliliters of milk every three hours. Is this symptom normal for the baby, or could there be a possibility of epilepsy? I've observed him squinting many times in the past few days. Have I noticed it recently?Doctor's answer:
Shaking the head has two reasons. First, it's because of sweating and an itchy scalp. Since babies have a faster metabolism, cleaning them up should be fine. The nervous system development in young children is not yet fully mature. Considering these behaviors in babies are usually normal, it's also possible that they may be calcium-deficient. I suggest taking your baby to a local regular hospital for a thorough examination. Have the baby tested for trace elements to check for calcium deficiency, and if there is a deficiency, supplement with calcium promptly.
