Patient's question:
Newborn at 33 days, just born with jaundice and stayed in the hospital for 5 days. After going home, the bilirubin level dropped to normal, but the jaundice hasn't fully gone away. The white part of the eyes is slightly yellow, and there's a bit of yellow on the gum ridge inside the mouth. This hasn't fully recovered. What could be interfering? When discharged, the doctor prescribed probiotics, which I took for a few days.Doctor's answer:
If other pathological factors have been ruled out, breast milk jaundice can be diagnosed. Breast milk jaundice can last for 2-3 months, non-hemolytic hyperbilirubinemia.Resolution of Breast Milk Jaundice:
- If bilirubin level is <15 mg/dL, continue exclusive breastfeeding and enhance monitoring data.
- If bilirubin level is 15-20 mg/dL, stop breastfeeding for 2-3 days and closely observe. If jaundice worsens, resume exclusive breastfeeding. At this stage, bilirubin may rebound slightly by 1-3 mg/dL, then continue to rise and gradually decline.
- If bilirubin level is >20 mg/dL, add phototherapy.
